Choosing grey tiles

Warm grey versus cool grey. Every grey has an undertone hiding underneath. Warm greys carry beige, taupe or brown. Cool greys carry blue, green or violet. Hold the sample next to a sheet of pure white paper, the undertone will jump out immediately. Specifying grey without identifying its undertone is the most common mistake in Australian renovation.

Why most Australian homes suit warm grey. Australian light is strong, golden and unforgiving. Cool greys can read flat, cold or slightly dirty under that light, especially in north-facing rooms. Warm greys hold their character through the day and pair more naturally with the timber tones, brick and sandstone already common in Australian homes.

Light grey versus dark grey. Light grey hides dust and lint; it shows hair and dropped food. Dark grey hides hair and food; it shows dust, lint and footprints. There is no grey that hides everything, choose for the mess you actually make.

Concrete-look greys. A whole category of their own, flat, mottled, urban. Best in matt finishes and large formats, and most flattering in living areas and modern kitchens rather than traditional homes.

Design & ordering

Grey with timber. The most common pairing in contemporary Australian homes, and the most commonly mishandled. Match undertone over tone. A warm grey tile pairs naturally with oak, walnut and spotted gum. A cool grey fights warm timbers and only sits well with blackbutt, ash or grey-washed boards.

Grey outdoors. Stone-look and concrete-look pavers in mid to dark grey are the workhorse of Australian landscaping, pool surrounds, alfresco floors, courtyards. Specify R11 or higher for wet zones and confirm UV stability for full-sun exposure.

Finish considerations. Matt for floors, particularly in wet areas. Lappato for living areas where you want subtle light reflection without the maintenance of full polish. Full polish only where it won't be walked on barefoot or wet.

Sample with grout. Grey grout against a grey tile changes the read dramatically, a warm grey tile with a cool grey grout will fight itself for the life of the floor. Always sample tile and grout together. Order samples →

Grey tile questions

Warm grey or cool grey?

Hold the sample against white paper, warm greys show beige/taupe; cool greys show blue/violet. Match undertone to your materials, not just the tone.

Most popular grey tile right now?

Soft warm-grey concrete-look in 600×1200, brick bond. Contemporary without being trend-led; pairs with oak and spotted gum.

Will grey tiles date?

Warm greys with texture and movement are timeless. Flat, blue-cool greys can read as era-specific. Warm grey with variation is safe for 20 years.

Grey tiles with timber floors?

Yes, but match undertones. Warm grey with warm timber; cool grey with cool-toned boards. Keep timber dominant; use grey for wet areas.

What grout colour with grey tiles?

Tone-on-tone is safest, match the grout to the mid-tone of the tile. Always sample tile and grout together before committing.
