Choosing 600×600 tiles
Why 600×600 dominates. At 2.78 tiles per square metre, 600×600 strikes the right balance between coverage and cuttability. Fewer joints than mosaics, fewer cuts than 600×1200, and a price point that remains the most competitive in the porcelain category. It is the format Australian builders specify by default.
The finishes available. Within 600×600 you can choose matte (the residential standard), honed (a soft sheen, common in marble-look), polished (reflective, best for low-traffic interiors) and textured (R10+, required for wet areas and outdoors). Each reads differently underfoot and under light.
600×600 vs 600×1200. The longer format reads more contemporary and visually expands smaller rooms, but it is less forgiving of substrate unevenness and costs more. 600×600 is the safer choice for older homes with imperfect slabs and for budgets that need to stretch.
Layout & installation
Avoid 50% offset. Tiles longer than 500mm should never be laid in a 50% brick-bond pattern. The natural bow in any rectified tile concentrates lippage at the centre of each adjacent edge. Use a maximum 1/3 offset or a straight stack.
Best layout patterns. Straight stack reads modern and minimises cutting waste. A 1/3 brick bond softens the grid without triggering lippage. Diagonal layouts add visual interest but increase cutting and waste considerably.
Ordering advice. Calculate area in m², add 10% for straight or 1/3 layouts, 15% for diagonal. Always order from a single batch, since shade and calibre vary subtly between production runs. Get a quote →
600×600 tile questions
How many 600×600 tiles per square metre?
2.78 tiles per m². Add 10% wastage for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal.
Are they too big for a small bathroom?
No, fewer grout lines make small rooms feel larger. Plan a linear drain to handle the fall.
Best layout pattern?
Straight stack or 1/3 brick bond. Never 50% offset on rectified tiles, as it causes lippage.
600×600 vs 600×1200?
1200 reads more contemporary but demands a flatter slab and costs more. 600×600 is more forgiving and better value.
